Judson History and Doc Ryder

One cannot reflect on Judson’s history without listening to and remembering Doc Ryder. His influence remains strong, even years after his passing in 2021—evident in both the works made possible through his generosity and the lives he touched.

Dr. Stuart A. Ryder was one of the most significant figures in shaping Judson across many decades. This site was originally created to introduce two books authored by Doc. The first, Adventures in Faith, recounts the founding of the school alongside the missionary work of its namesake, Adoniram Judson, in Burma. The second, Why Didn’t I Get an A?, reflects on Doc’s life before becoming a professor and his impactful years on the faculty during the formative decades of what would become Judson University.

Now, a newly released book adds a personal layer to the story: Breakfast with Doc. Told by a former student who became Doc’s assistant and close friend, this book recounts their many interactions, including morning conversations at Doc’s favorite spot, the Big Skillet. It offers a glimpse into the heart of the man who shaped not just an institution but a generation of students.

Together, these books offer valuable insight into Judson University’s roots. Judson is a living organism—shaped by dreams, accomplishments, setbacks, and the vibrant relationships among its people. Through the eyes of one of its most influential faculty members and a student he mentored, we see how leadership leaves a lasting legacy—felt deeply in both the University and the lives of those it touches.
